Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

South Bound Brook NJ electrician on power line poleThere are several options to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near South Bound Brook NJ. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the three most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by New Jersey vocational and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are offered by New Jersey community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some New Jersey institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

South Bound Brook NJ electrician wiring boxElectricians in South Bound Brook NJ can undertake a multitude of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be acquired in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

South Bound Brook NJ student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have looked at is selecting an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning might be a more accommodating option for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Commuting costs from South Bound Brook NJ are also minimized and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask South Bound Brook NJ electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your training options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the South Bound Brook NJ area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are additional variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the South Bound Brook NJ program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help South Bound Brook NJ students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with South Bound Brook NJ area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local South Bound Brook NJ electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your South Bound Brook home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near South Bound Brook NJ, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
