Vienna NJ electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Vienna NJ. But with numerous vocational schools to select from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are so many factors to evaluate. For example, some prospective students will begin by searching for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have located some that are within commuting distance, they will select the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though location and cost are important, they are not the only things that must be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational choices that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Vienna NJ electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Vienna NJ. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are brief explanations of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by New Jersey vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by New Jersey junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain New Jersey institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Vienna NJ electrician wiring boxElectricians in Vienna NJ can undertake a wide range of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around four to five years of experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Vienna NJ student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have looked at is selecting an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools are becoming more accepted as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning might be a more practical alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Travelling costs from Vienna NJ are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Vienna NJ electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Vienna NJ area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other factors that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess prior to enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Vienna NJ school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a superior education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Vienna NJ students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Vienna NJ area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Vienna NJ electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Vienna home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Vienna NJ, check that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

But as we have addressed in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to evaluate and compare among the training programs you are looking at. It’s a necessity that any electrical training that you are evaluating includes a considerable amount of hands-on training. Classes should be smaller in size and every student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to provide a real-world context, and the curriculum should be current and conform with industry standards. Training programs vary in length and the kind of credential offered, so you will need to decide what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Every program offers different options for certification as well. Perhaps the best way to research your final list of schools is to go to each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Invest some time to sit in on a few classes. Tour the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the program you pick is the best one for you. With the proper training, effort and dedication, the final outcome will be a new trade as a professional electrician in Vienna NJ.
