Wanaque NJ electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Wanaque NJ. But with numerous vocational schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are a number of variables to evaluate. For instance, many prospective students will start by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have identified some that are within commuting distance, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though location and cost are significant, they are not the only qualifications that need to be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the training choices that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Wanaque NJ electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Wanaque NJ. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are short explanations of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by New Jersey technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to finish and are offered by New Jersey junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some New Jersey colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Wanaque NJ electrician wiring boxElectricians in Wanaque NJ can carry out a wide range of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around four to five years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be obtained in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Wanaque NJ student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have looked at is selecting an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools have become more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, internet learning can be a more practical option for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Commuting costs from Wanaque NJ are also minimized and some of the study materials may be accessed online also. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Wanaque NJ electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Wanaque NJ area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that need to be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Wanaque NJ program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get a superior education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Wanaque NJ grads obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Wanaque NJ area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Wanaque NJ electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Wanaque residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Wanaque NJ, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
