Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Alcalde NM electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Alcalde NM. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by New Mexico vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are provided by New Mexico community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some New Mexico institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Alcalde NM electrician wiring boxElectricians in Alcalde NM can undertake a wide range of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around 4 to 5 years of experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you choose not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Alcalde NM student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have considered is choosing an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools have become more popular as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, distance learning can be a more accommodating choice for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Driving costs from Alcalde NM are also lessened and some of the study materials may be accessed online also. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Alcalde NM electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Alcalde NM region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Alcalde NM program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a quality education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Alcalde NM graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Alcalde NM area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Alcalde NM electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Alcalde home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Alcalde NM, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
