Minetto NY electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Minetto NY. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly since there are so many points to examine. For example, some students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. After they have identified a few that are within commuting distance, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though cost and location are important, they are not the sole things that should be evaluated. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your final decision when choosing an electrician training school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Minetto NY electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Minetto NY. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by New York trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to complete and are offered by New York junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain New York institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Minetto NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Minetto NY can carry out a wide range of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually about four to five years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually assess electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be earned in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Schools

Minetto NY student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is selecting an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient choice for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Commuting expenses from Minetto NY are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Minetto NY electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Since there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Minetto NY region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other variables that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Minetto NY school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Minetto NY grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Minetto NY area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Minetto NY electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Minetto residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Minetto NY, confirm that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
