Parish NY electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Parish NY. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly because there are a number of variables to evaluate. For instance, some students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their residence. When they have identified some that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the most affordable tuition. Although cost and location are important, they are not the only things that need to be considered. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should influence your final judgment when picking an electrician trade school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the instructional options that are offered.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Parish NY electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Parish NY. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by New York vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by New York community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain New York institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Criteria

Parish NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Parish NY can perform a vast array of duties, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around 4 to 5 years of experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be obtained in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Schools

Parish NY student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have contemplated is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs are becoming more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, internet learning might be a more practical choice for students that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Commuting costs from Parish NY are also reduced and some of the study materials can be available online also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Parish NY electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your training options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Parish NY region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional variables that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess prior to enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Parish NY school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Parish NY graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Parish NY area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Parish NY electrical contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Parish residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Parish NY, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
