For instance, many potential students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. Although location and cost are of importance, they are not the sole qualifications that should be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Shandaken NY electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Shandaken NY. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are short descriptions of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by New York vocational and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are offered by New York junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain New York colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Shandaken NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Shandaken NY can carry out a wide range of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally around 4 to 5 years of experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you pick not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Shandaken NY student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have considered is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs are becoming more accepted as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more accommodating alternative for students that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Driving costs from Shandaken NY are also minimized and some of the study materials may be available on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Shandaken NY electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your training options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Shandaken NY area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Shandaken NY program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Shandaken NY grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Shandaken NY area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Shandaken NY electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Shandaken residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Shandaken NY, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

But as we have covered in this article, there are many things that you will need to examine and compare among the schools you are reviewing. It’s a must that any electrical tech school that you are assessing includes a considerable amount of hands-on instruction. Classes should be smaller in size and every student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education should provide a real-world context, and the curriculum should be current and in-line with industry standards. Programs differ in length and the kind of credential provided, so you will have to determine what length of program and credential will best satisfy your needs. Every program provides unique options for certification also. Probably the best means to research your final list of schools is to go to each campus and speak with the students and faculty.
