But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are so many variables to examine. For example, some potential students will start by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have identified some that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the most affordable tuition. Although cost and location are significant, they are not the sole factors that should be considered. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your ultimate judgment when selecting an electrician trade school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this article. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

West Haverstraw NY electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near West Haverstraw NY. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by New York trade and technical schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to finish and are offered by New York community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain New York institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed before licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

West Haverstraw NY electrician wiring boxElectricians in West Haverstraw NY can carry out a vast array of functions, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around four to five years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you select not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

West Haverstraw NY student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have looked at is choosing an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs have become more popular as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, distance learning can be a more accommodating option for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Driving expenses from West Haverstraw NY are also reduced and some of the study materials may be accessed on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask West Haverstraw NY electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the West Haverstraw NY region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional factors that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the West Haverstraw NY school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help West Haverstraw NY students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with West Haverstraw NY area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local West Haverstraw NY electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your West Haverstraw home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near West Haverstraw NY, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
