Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

West Stockholm NY electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to get electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near West Stockholm NY. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the three most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by New York vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who would like to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are provided by New York junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some New York colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about four to five years of experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you select not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your West Stockholm home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

    New York State Route 11C

New York State Route 11C (NY 11C) is a short state highway located in St. Lawrence County in the northern part of New York in the United States. NY 11C is a northern alternate route of U.S. Route 11 (US 11) between the towns of Stockholm and Lawrence that serves the hamlets of Winthrop and Brasher Falls. NY 11C briefly overlaps with NY 420 in Winthrop. Although NY 11C follows a mostly east–west routing, it is signed as a north–south route.

The current alignment of NY 11C was originally part of US 11. An alternate route of then-US 11 between Stockholm Center and Coteys Corner that bypassed the Brasher Falls area to the south was added to the state highway system on September 1, 1982, and designated as NY 11C. The alignments of US 11 and NY 11C between the two hamlets were flipped on June 13, 1992, placing both routes on their current routings.

NY 11C begins at an intersection with US 11 in the hamlet of Stockholm Center within the town of Stockholm. The highway heads to the northeast, intersecting with a local road west of the Meadowbrook Golf Club. NY 11C continues on, crossing over the west branch of the St. Regis River and entering a residential area of Stockholm known as Winthrop. In the hamlet, NY 11C overlaps with NY 420 for one block. NY 420 turns off at the center of the community and heads toward Massena while NY 11C continues northeast out of Winthrop and into the town of Brasher.[3]
