Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Mount Mourne NC electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Mount Mourne NC. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by North Carolina trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to complete and are provided by North Carolina junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some North Carolina colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be acquired in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. Otherwise, ask a local Mount Mourne NC electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Mount Mourne residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Mount Mourne NC, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those options. Mount Mourne Plantation

Mount Mourne Plantation is a former Southern plantation and historic house located in Mount Mourne, Iredell County, North Carolina. It was built in 1836, and is a two-story, five-bay transitional Federal / Greek Revival style frame dwelling. It features a hipped roof entrance portico with four fluted Tuscan order columns.[2]

The plantation house was built by Major Rufus Reid (1797-1854).[3] He grew cotton, wheat and corn.[3] In its heyday, the Plantation was one of the largest in the area, and the second largest in Iredell County, being worked by around 88 slaves at one point.[3] This made Rufus Reid one of the wealthiest and most prosperous planters in not only the area, but the state as a whole.[3]
