Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Antwerp OH electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Antwerp OH. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Ohio trade and technical schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are offered by Ohio junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Ohio institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Antwerp OH electrician wiring boxElectricians in Antwerp OH can perform a vast array of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually about four to five years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Antwerp OH student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have looked at is selecting an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs have become more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more accommodating alternative for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus numerous online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Commuting costs from Antwerp OH are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Antwerp OH electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Antwerp OH area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are additional factors that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Antwerp OH program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Antwerp OH students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Antwerp OH area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Antwerp OH electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Antwerp residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Antwerp OH, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Antwerp, Ohio

Antwerp is the nearest village to the Six Mile Reservoir, the site of the Reservoir War in 1887. Antwerp is the birthplace of Asa Long, the checkers player. The place is named after the Belgian city of Antwerp.

Antwerp is located in the former wetland region known until the 19th century as the Great Black Swamp.[6] Antwerp was founded in 1841 on the Wabash and Erie canal and moved to its present location when the railroad was extended to that point.[7] The village was named after Antwerp, in Belgium.[8]

In the late 19th century, Antwerp was the largest village in Paulding County; its economy was driven by a lucrative local logging industry.[citation needed] Accordingly, when the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway decided to erect a train station in the village, it was built larger than stations in most other communities in the region.[citation needed] After the train station closed in 1976, it was purchased by the local historical society; today, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Antwerp Norfolk and Western Depot.[9]
