Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Coolville OH electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Coolville OH. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Ohio vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to finish and are provided by Ohio community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Ohio institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around 4 to 5 years of experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Furthermore, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Coolville OH graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Coolville OH electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Coolville home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Coolville OH, confirm that the schools you are comparing provide those choices.
