Gratis OH electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Gratis OH. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially because there are a number of points to evaluate. For example, some prospective students will start by looking for schools that are close to their residence. Once they have found some that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. Although location and cost are significant, they are not the only qualifications that must be considered. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your final judgment when selecting an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training choices that are available.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Gratis OH electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Gratis OH. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Ohio trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards students who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are provided by Ohio junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Ohio colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Gratis OH electrician wiring boxElectricians in Gratis OH can undertake a wide range of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around four to five years of experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Gratis OH student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have looked at is selecting an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online schools have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning might be a more convenient option for students that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Travelling costs from Gratis OH are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available online also. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Gratis OH electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Gratis OH area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are additional factors that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Gratis OH school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Gratis OH graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Gratis OH area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Gratis OH electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Gratis home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Gratis OH, check that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

It’s a must that any electrical training program that you are reviewing includes a lot of hands-on training. Classes need to be smaller in size and each student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to offer a real-world context, and the training program should be current and conform with industry standards. Training programs vary in length and the kind of credential provided, so you will need to decide what length of program and credential will best serve your needs. Every training program offers unique possibilities for certification as well. Perhaps the best approach to research your final list of schools is to go to each campus and speak with the students and instructors. Invest some time to sit in on some classes.
