Rittman OH electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Rittman OH. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly because there are so many factors to consider. For instance, many prospective students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their home. After they have found some that are within driving range, they will choose the one with the lowest tuition. Even though cost and location are significant, they are not the only factors that should be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your final judgment when choosing an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Rittman OH electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Rittman OH. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the three most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Ohio trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are provided by Ohio junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Ohio institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Rittman OH electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rittman OH can undertake a multitude of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be acquired in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you select not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Rittman OH student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have considered is selecting an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools have become more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning can be a more accommodating option for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Travelling costs from Rittman OH are also reduced and some of the study materials can be accessed online as well. All of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Rittman OH electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Rittman OH region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Rittman OH program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Rittman OH graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Rittman OH area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Rittman OH electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Rittman residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Rittman OH, check that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
