Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Agra OK electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Agra OK. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are short summaries of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Oklahoma technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are provided by Oklahoma junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Oklahoma colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Agra OK electrician wiring boxElectricians in Agra OK can undertake a vast array of duties, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Agra OK student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have contemplated is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning can be a more accommodating alternative for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting costs from Agra OK are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician tech schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Agra OK electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Agra OK region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional factors that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Agra OK program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Agra OK students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Agra OK area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Agra OK electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Agra residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Agra OK, check that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.

    Agra, Oklahoma

Agra began to form around the turn of 20th Century. A post office opened in Agra in December 20, 1902, with Isaac C. Pierce serving as the first postmaster. The Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad (which later became part of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway (also known as MKT or "Katy") built a line from Oklahoma City to Parsons, Kansas between 1902 and 1904.[a] The townsite was developed after two local farmers, Frank Wheeler and Sam Holder, sold their lands along the railroad. American Land Loan and Trust Company divided the site into town lots.[4]

The first businesses in town were a drugstore, opened by John Olmstead and a general store opened by Mark Crane. Otherwise, the first buildings were houses and a few churches. The Bank of Agra was built in 1904.{{The Bank of Agra was listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NR 90000122). Attempts to save the bank building, failed due to its deterioration, and it was razed in August 1999.[4]}} School was taught in churches until 1905, when the first school building was constructed. By 1918, the town had also added the Commercial Hotel and a cotton gin. Early newspapers published in Agra were the Agra News and the Queen City Times.[b] However, both the nickname and the newspaper passed into oblivion many years ago.

In the 21st Century, most of the permanent residents have been employed by the oil and gas industry, and/or commuted to work in other towns.[4] Agra is essentially a bedroom community. It is now a small country town, but has 3 churches, a restaurant, elementary and high school, post office, and convenience store.
