Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Council Hill OK electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Council Hill OK. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Oklahoma vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are offered by Oklahoma community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Oklahoma institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Council Hill OK electrician wiring boxElectricians in Council Hill OK can undertake a vast array of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about four to five years of experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be obtained in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Schools

Although online training programs have become more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning may be a more accommodating option for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Council Hill OK are also lessened and some of the study materials may be available online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Council Hill OK electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Since there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Council Hill OK area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional variables that need to be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Council Hill OK school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a quality education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Council Hill OK graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Council Hill OK area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Council Hill OK electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Council Hill residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Council Hill OK, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

    Council Hill, Oklahoma

Council Hill began as a council house for the Creek Nation about 1840, after the tribe had been forced to emigrate to Indian Territory. The Creeks named this location as Weklwa Hulwe or "High Spring," and consider it their first capital. Smoke signals from the top of the hill announced calls for general council meetings to other Creek towns in the vicinity. After the outbreak of the American Civil War, this place became the headquarters of the Creek Regiment of the Confederate Army, led by D. N. McIntosh.[4]

After the Civil War, Council Hill became a simple farm community. The first post office was established in 1905. The Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad (later Kansas, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad) opened a line through the town in 1907 that enabled shipment of livestock and farm products to markets in the north and east. Cotton was the main crop, but other products included corn, potatoes, wheat, and oats. Oklahoma Pipeline Company built a pumping station at Council Hill for its line that carried crude oil from Glenn Pool to the Gulf Coast.[4]

    Council Hill is located at 35°33′19″N 95°39′7″W / 35.55528°N 95.65194°W / 35.55528; -95.65194 (35.555141, -95.652076).[5] It is 25 miles (40 km) south of Muskogee on U. S. Highway 72.[4]
