Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Sawyer OK electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Sawyer OK. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Oklahoma vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are offered by Oklahoma junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Oklahoma colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Sawyer OK electrician wiring boxElectricians in Sawyer OK can undertake a vast array of duties, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about four to five years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be obtained in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you select not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to take in the future.

A low completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. If not, ask a local Sawyer OK electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Sawyer home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Sawyer OK, check that the schools you are comparing provide those options.
