Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Schulter OK electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Schulter OK. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Oklahoma trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to complete and are provided by Oklahoma community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Oklahoma colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about four to five years of experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be obtained in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Schulter OK student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have considered is selecting an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools have become more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning can be a more practical option for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Driving expenses from Schulter OK are also minimized and some of the study materials can be available on line also. Each of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Schulter OK electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your training options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Schulter OK region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional factors that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Schulter OK school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Schulter OK students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Schulter OK area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Schulter OK electrical company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Schulter residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Schulter OK, confirm that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrician Degree Online and wanting more information on the topic Electrical Technician Courses. But as we have addressed in this article, there are a number of factors that you will need to examine and compare among the schools you are reviewing. It’s a prerequisite that any electrician training program that you are reviewing includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes should be smaller in size and every student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to offer a real-world context, and the training program should be current and in-line with industry standards. Training programs vary in length and the type of credential provided, so you will need to decide what length of program and credential will best serve your needs. Each training program offers different possibilities for certification as well. Perhaps the best approach to research your final list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the faculty and students. Invest some time to sit in on some classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the program you pick is the ideal one for you. With the right training, hard work and commitment, the final outcome will be a new trade as a professional electrician in Schulter OK.
