Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Waukomis OK electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Waukomis OK. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Oklahoma vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are offered by Oklahoma junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Oklahoma colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly around four to five years of experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.
