Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Mifflinville PA electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Mifflinville PA. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the three most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Pennsylvania vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to finish and are provided by Pennsylvania junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Pennsylvania colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you select not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to pass in the future.

The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Mifflinville PA grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Mifflinville PA electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Mifflinville home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Mifflinville PA, confirm that the programs you are looking at offer those choices.
