Even though location and cost are significant, they are not the sole things that should be considered. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Norwood PA electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Norwood PA. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Pennsylvania trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are provided by Pennsylvania junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Pennsylvania colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Norwood PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Norwood PA can perform a wide range of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be earned in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Norwood PA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is choosing an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning may be a more convenient alternative for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Driving costs from Norwood PA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Norwood PA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Norwood PA region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Norwood PA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Norwood PA grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Norwood PA area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Norwood PA electrical contractor if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Norwood home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Norwood PA, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Classroom teaching should offer a real-world frame of reference, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Training programs differ in length and the kind of credential provided, so you will have to decide what length of program and certificate or degree will best serve your needs. Every program offers different options for certification as well. Probably The ideal approach to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the students and instructors. Invest some time to attend a few classes.
