How to Choose the Best Electrician Trade School near Tarentum Pennsylvania

Tarentum PA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Tarentum PA. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are so many points to evaluate. For example, some potential students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have found several that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. Although location and cost are important, they are not the sole things that must be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your final decision when selecting an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional options that are available.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Tarentum PA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Tarentum PA. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Pennsylvania technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are provided by Pennsylvania junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Pennsylvania institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Tarentum PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Tarentum PA can carry out a vast array of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you pick not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may be required to take in the future.

Tarentum PA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is choosing an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more accommodating choice for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Tarentum PA are also lessened and some of the study materials can be accessed online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Tarentum PA electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your training options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Tarentum PA region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other factors that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Tarentum PA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Tarentum PA graduates secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Tarentum PA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Tarentum PA electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Tarentum residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Tarentum PA, verify that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
