You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by South Dakota technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are provided by South Dakota junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain South Dakota institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing.
