Burlison TN electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Burlison TN. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are a number of factors to evaluate. For example, some prospective students will start by searching for schools that are close to their home. When they have identified several that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the lowest tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the only things that must be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should influence your final judgment when choosing an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the educational choices that are offered.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Burlison TN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Burlison TN. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by Tennessee trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards students who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are provided by Tennessee community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Tennessee colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Burlison TN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Burlison TN can undertake a multitude of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about four to five years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you select not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Burlison TN student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs have become more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, distance learning might be a more accommodating alternative for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Driving costs from Burlison TN are also reduced and some of the study materials may be accessed online also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Burlison TN electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Burlison TN region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are other factors that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Burlison TN school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Burlison TN students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Burlison TN area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Burlison TN electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your Burlison home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Burlison TN, check that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
