Lebanon TN electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Lebanon TN. But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are a number of factors to consider. For instance, many prospective students will start by looking for schools that are close to their home. After they have identified several that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the cheapest tuition. While location and cost are of importance, they are not the sole qualifications that need to be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your final decision when selecting an electrician training school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional choices that are available.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Lebanon TN electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Lebanon TN. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Tennessee vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are offered by Tennessee junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Tennessee institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

Lebanon TN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Lebanon TN can undertake a vast array of duties, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about four to five years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Lebanon TN student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have contemplated is selecting an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning might be a more practical choice for students that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Travelling costs from Lebanon TN are also minimized and some of the study materials may be available online as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Lebanon TN electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Lebanon TN region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are other variables that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Lebanon TN program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Lebanon TN grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Lebanon TN area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Lebanon TN electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Lebanon residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Lebanon TN, confirm that the schools you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Classes should be smaller in size and every student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom education should provide a real-world context, and the curriculum should be current and in-line with industry standards. Programs differ in duration and the kind of credential offered, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and degree or certificate will best satisfy your needs. Every program provides unique options for certification also. Probably the best way to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the students and faculty.
