Niota TN electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Niota TN. But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are so many variables to examine. For example, some prospective students will begin by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have located some that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the most affordable tuition. Even though location and cost are of importance, they are not the only factors that must be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your final decision when choosing an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this article. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Niota TN electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Niota TN. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Tennessee vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to complete and are provided by Tennessee community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Tennessee colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Niota TN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Niota TN can carry out a wide range of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about four to five years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

Niota TN student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online training programs are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning can be a more convenient alternative for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Driving costs from Niota TN are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Niota TN electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Niota TN region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Niota TN school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Niota TN grads secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Niota TN area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Niota TN electrical contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Niota home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Niota TN, confirm that the schools you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
