Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Surgoinsville TN electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Surgoinsville TN. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Tennessee trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to complete and are provided by Tennessee community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Tennessee institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about four to five years of experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you pick not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to take in the future.

And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research before enrolling in an electrical tech school.

The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Surgoinsville TN graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Surgoinsville TN electrical contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Surgoinsville residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Surgoinsville TN, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those options.
