Abernathy TX electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Abernathy TX. But with so many technical schools to select from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are so many factors to consider. For instance, many students will begin by searching for schools that are close to their residence. Once they have found some that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. While cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that should be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate decision when picking an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational choices that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Abernathy TX electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Abernathy TX. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Texas vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to finish and are offered by Texas junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Texas institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Abernathy TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Abernathy TX can carry out a vast array of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be acquired in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you select not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Abernathy TX student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have looked at is choosing an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more convenient option for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Abernathy TX are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online also. All of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Abernathy TX electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Abernathy TX region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional factors that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Abernathy TX program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a quality education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Abernathy TX students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Abernathy TX area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Abernathy TX electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Abernathy residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Abernathy TX, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
