Bastrop TX electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Bastrop TX. But with numerous vocational schools to select from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are so many factors to examine. For example, some prospective students will commence by looking for schools that are close to their residence. When they have found several that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though location and cost are of importance, they are not the sole things that must be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Bastrop TX electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Bastrop TX. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short descriptions of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Texas vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are offered by Texas community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Texas institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Bastrop TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Bastrop TX can carry out a wide range of tasks, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically about four to five years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more accommodating choice for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Driving costs from Bastrop TX are also reduced and some of the study materials may be available online as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Bastrop TX electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your training options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Bastrop TX area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other factors that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Bastrop TX program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Bastrop TX graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Bastrop TX area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Bastrop TX electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Bastrop residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Bastrop TX, check that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
