Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your final judgment when choosing an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this post. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Brazoria TX electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Brazoria TX. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Texas technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are provided by Texas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Texas colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Brazoria TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Brazoria TX can perform a multitude of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of experience is needed in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be earned in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you pick not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Brazoria TX student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have looked at is enrolling in an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning can be a more practical option for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Driving costs from Brazoria TX are also minimized and some of the study materials can be available online also. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Brazoria TX electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Brazoria TX area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional factors that must be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Brazoria TX program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Brazoria TX grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Brazoria TX area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Brazoria TX electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Brazoria home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Brazoria TX, confirm that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.

It’s a must that any electrical training that you are considering includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes should be small in size and each student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom instruction needs to provide a real-world context, and the curriculum should be current and conform with industry standards. Courses vary in duration and the kind of credential offered, so you will need to ascertain what length of program and degree or certificate will best satisfy your needs. Each training program provides different possibilities for certification as well.
