Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Bruni TX electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Bruni TX. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Texas technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are offered by Texas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Texas colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you select not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may be required to pass in the future.
