Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Dale TX electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Dale TX. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are short explanations of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Texas technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are provided by Texas community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Texas colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Prerequisites

Dale TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Dale TX can undertake a vast array of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you select not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Things to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Dale TX electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Dale TX area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Dale TX school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Dale TX grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Dale TX area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Dale TX electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Dale residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Dale TX, check that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Dale, Texas

Dale is an unincorporated community in Caldwell County, Texas, United States.[1] The settlement had a population of 500 in 2000.[2] It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area.[citation needed]

Dale was named for the valley in which it is located.[clarification needed] The Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad arrived in 1880 and the town's post office was granted that same year. Within five years, Dale had a population of 75. The town had three stores, a gristmill and cotton gin, which shipped cotton into the community. By 1914, Dale had a population of 250 and 15 businesses, but this declined to 200 between 1925 and 1943. The 1936 county highway map showed several homes, two churches, several businesses, and a seasonal industry in the community. Dale reached its population zenith in 1947 with 275 residents, but then decreased to 126 from 1970 to the early 1990's. It had 14 businesses at that time. Its most recent population estimate was 500 in 2000.[2]
