Although cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that need to be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Eagle Lake TX electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Eagle Lake TX. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by Texas technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are offered by Texas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Texas colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Eagle Lake TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Eagle Lake TX can undertake a vast array of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Eagle Lake TX student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have contemplated is selecting an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more convenient option for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Eagle Lake TX are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available on line as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Eagle Lake TX electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Eagle Lake TX region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Eagle Lake TX program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Eagle Lake TX students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Eagle Lake TX area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Eagle Lake TX electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Eagle Lake residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Eagle Lake TX, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

Classroom education should offer a real-world frame of reference, and the training program should be current and in-line with industry standards.
