Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Eden TX electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Eden TX. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are short summaries of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Texas vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are offered by Texas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Texas colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be obtained in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to take in the future.

An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Eden TX electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Eden home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. Eden, Texas

Eden is a city in Concho County, Texas, United States.[4] Eden is also the center of Texas. The population was 2,766 at the 2010 census. About half of the population consists of inmates housed at the Eden Detention Center.

The earliest settlers were the family of Harvey and Louisa McCarty.[1] Frederick Ede and his family moved to the area around 1881. In 1882, Ede donated 40 acres (16 ha) of land to be used as a townsite and to build a town square. The following year, a post office was established and was named "Eden", an adaptation of Frederick Ede's name.[1][5]

By 1890, Eden had a general store, a jeweler, a saloon, a Baptist church (organized in 1886), and a population exceeding 100.[1][6] A newspaper, The Eden Echo, was founded in 1906.[7] That same year, a bank was established. Telephone service arrived about 1907, and a public well and windmill were installed in 1908.[1]
