Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Francitas TX electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Francitas TX. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Texas technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are offered by Texas junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Texas colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Francitas TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Francitas TX can perform a vast array of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you select not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Francitas TX electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Francitas TX region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Francitas TX school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Francitas TX grads obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Francitas TX area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Francitas TX electrical company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Francitas home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Francitas TX, check that the programs you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

Francitas is located at 28°51′35″N 96°20′19″W / 28.85972°N 96.33861°W / 28.85972; -96.33861 (28.8597082, -96.3385798). It is situated along FM 616 in southeastern Jackson County, approximately 28 miles south of El Campo and 30 miles east of Victoria.[2]

A small colony of French families settled in the area during the late 1890s and soon thereafter, railroad employees named the community Francitas.[1] The Valley Fruit Farm and Garden Company promoted the community by publicly selling lots in 1909. A year later, acreage purchased from local rancher Lafayette Ward was surveyed into additional lots for settlement. The Francitas post office was established in 1911, with C.O. Hardy serving as its first postmaster. It became a stop on the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway in 1914.[2] The population peaked at around 300 in 1940 with a total of three businesses operating in the community. During the latter half of the twentieth century, Francitas experienced fluctuations in its population. From approximately 100 in the 1950s, Francitas was home to 200 residents in the early 1960ss. That number had declined to 30 by 1990 before increasing to 143 in 2000.[1]
