Itasca TX electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Itasca TX. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are a number of points to evaluate. For example, many potential students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their residence. When they have found some that are within driving distance, they will choose the one with the lowest tuition. Even though cost and location are of importance, they are not the only qualifications that should be evaluated. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should influence your final judgment when selecting an electrician trade school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational choices that are offered.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Itasca TX electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Itasca TX. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Texas vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to complete and are offered by Texas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Texas colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Itasca TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Itasca TX can undertake a wide range of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about four to five years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be obtained in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Itasca TX student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have looked at is selecting an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Although online schools are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, internet learning might be a more accommodating choice for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Commuting costs from Itasca TX are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Itasca TX electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Itasca TX region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are other variables that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Itasca TX program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Itasca TX students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Itasca TX area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Itasca TX electrical contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Itasca home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Itasca TX, confirm that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
