Kempner TX electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Kempner TX. But with numerous vocational schools to choose from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly because there are a number of factors to evaluate. For instance, some students will start by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have identified some that are within driving distance, they will decide on the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though cost and location are important, they are not the sole qualifications that should be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should help mold your ultimate decision when selecting an electrician school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this article. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Kempner TX electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Kempner TX. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are short summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Texas vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are provided by Texas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Texas colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Kempner TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Kempner TX can carry out a multitude of functions, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be obtained in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Kempner TX student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is choosing an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs have become more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not totally internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient choice for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Travelling costs from Kempner TX are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online also. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Kempner TX electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Considering that there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Kempner TX region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional factors that need to be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Kempner TX school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Kempner TX students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Kempner TX area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Kempner TX electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Kempner residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Kempner TX, verify that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
