Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Kennedale TX electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Kennedale TX. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are short summaries of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Texas vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are offered by Texas junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Texas institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Kennedale TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Kennedale TX can perform a multitude of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you select not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to pass in the future.

But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more practical alternative for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Kennedale TX are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be available online also. All of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Kennedale TX electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Kennedale TX area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are other factors that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Kennedale TX school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Kennedale TX students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Kennedale TX area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Kennedale TX electrical company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Kennedale home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Kennedale TX, verify that the schools you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
