Midway TX electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Midway TX. But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you approach making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are a number of factors to examine. For instance, many students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their residence. After they have found some that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. While cost and location are important, they are not the sole factors that must be considered. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should influence your ultimate judgment when choosing an electrician school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this post. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Midway TX electrician on power line poleThere are several options to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Midway TX. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Texas vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are provided by Texas junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Texas institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Midway TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Midway TX can undertake a wide range of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you choose not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Midway TX student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have contemplated is choosing an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs have become more popular as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more convenient alternative for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Driving costs from Midway TX are also minimized and some of the study materials may be available on line as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Midway TX electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Midway TX area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The initial two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are additional factors that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Midway TX school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Midway TX grads secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Midway TX area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Midway TX electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Midway home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Midway TX, verify that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
