Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Mineral TX electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Mineral TX. You may select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Texas trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by Texas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Texas colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET).
