Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Riesel TX electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Riesel TX. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Texas technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require two years to finish and are provided by Texas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Texas colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually about four to five years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be obtained in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you choose not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to pass in the future.

The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional variables that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Riesel TX school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Riesel TX grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Riesel TX area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Riesel TX electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Riesel residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Riesel TX, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Riesel is a city in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,007 at the 2010 census, a slight increase from the 973 people who lived in Riesel at the 2000 census.[3] It is part of the Waco Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Riesel, one of the original settlers who built a Cotton gin there, has steadily been growing since being settled around 1880-90.[4] With the exception of a small decrease in population from 1930 to 1950, Riesel's population has continued to grow to a point where the town currently has over 1,000 residents.[5]

A new power plant has increased city funds and the population. In early May, 2010, voters approved a $25,000,000 bond for the Riesel Independent School District that would build a new high school, administration building, softball and baseball field amongst other things.[6]
