Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Rochester TX electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Rochester TX. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are short explanations of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Texas trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who would like to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are provided by Texas junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Texas institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Rochester TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rochester TX can perform a multitude of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be earned in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

Rochester TX student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have considered is choosing an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs have become more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning may be a more accommodating choice for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Driving expenses from Rochester TX are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available online also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Rochester TX electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Rochester TX area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other variables that must be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Rochester TX school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Rochester TX graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Rochester TX area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Rochester TX electrical company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Rochester residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Rochester TX, check that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
