Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Scroggins TX electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Scroggins TX. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Texas vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Texas community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some Texas colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Scroggins TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Scroggins TX can undertake a vast array of functions, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around four to five years of experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you pick not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, internet learning might be a more convenient option for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Driving expenses from Scroggins TX are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Scroggins TX electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Scroggins TX area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other factors that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Scroggins TX program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Scroggins TX students secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Scroggins TX area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Scroggins TX electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Scroggins residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Scroggins TX, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
