Hampden Sydney VA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Hampden Sydney VA. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are a number of variables to evaluate. For example, many prospective students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their home. When they have identified a few that are within commuting distance, they will decide on the one with the cheapest tuition. While cost and location are significant, they are not the sole factors that must be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should contribute toward your final decision when picking an electrician trade school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this article. Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Hampden Sydney VA electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Hampden Sydney VA. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Virginia trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Virginia junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Virginia institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Hampden Sydney VA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Hampden Sydney VA can perform a wide range of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Hampden Sydney VA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on-campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, distance learning might be a more accommodating choice for students that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Driving costs from Hampden Sydney VA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Hampden Sydney VA electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Hampden Sydney VA area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other factors that must be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Hampden Sydney VA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Hampden Sydney VA graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Hampden Sydney VA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Hampden Sydney VA electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Hampden Sydney home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Hampden Sydney VA, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
