Kilmarnock VA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Kilmarnock VA. But with so many technical schools to select from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are a number of factors to examine. For example, some potential students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their home. After they have found a few that are within commuting distance, they will pick the one with the cheapest tuition. While location and cost are important, they are not the only qualifications that should be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should help mold your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician trade school. We will discuss that checklist in more detail later in this article. But first, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational options that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Kilmarnock VA electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Kilmarnock VA. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are short summaries of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by Virginia vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to complete and are provided by Virginia community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Virginia institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

Kilmarnock VA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Kilmarnock VA can undertake a multitude of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly around four to five years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

Kilmarnock VA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have considered is choosing an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient choice for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Driving expenses from Kilmarnock VA are also reduced and some of the study materials can be available on line also. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Kilmarnock VA electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Kilmarnock VA area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional factors that must be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Kilmarnock VA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Kilmarnock VA graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Kilmarnock VA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Kilmarnock VA electrical contractor if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Kilmarnock home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Kilmarnock VA, confirm that the schools you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

But as we have covered in this article, there are many factors that you will need to examine and compare among the training programs you are reviewing. It’s a must that any electrician training that you are assessing includes a lot of hands-on training. Classes should be small in size and each student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom instruction needs to provide a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be current and in-line with industry standards. Courses differ in length and the type of credential provided, so you will need to ascertain what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Each training program offers different options for certification also.
