Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Rochelle VA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Rochelle VA. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Virginia trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to finish and are offered by Virginia junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Virginia colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Rochelle VA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rochelle VA can perform a multitude of functions, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually about four to five years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you pick not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, internet learning might be a more convenient option for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Driving expenses from Rochelle VA are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line also. All of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Rochelle VA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Rochelle VA region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional factors that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Rochelle VA school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a superior education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Rochelle VA students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Rochelle VA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Rochelle VA electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Rochelle residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Rochelle VA, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
