Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Delbarton WV electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Delbarton WV. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by West Virginia trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to complete and are provided by West Virginia community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain West Virginia colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be acquired in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
