But with numerous vocational schools to select from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are a number of points to consider. For instance, some students will start by searching for schools that are nearby their home. After they have located several that are within driving distance, they will pick the one with the most affordable tuition. Even though location and cost are important, they are not the sole things that need to be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Halltown WV electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Halltown WV. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by West Virginia vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are offered by West Virginia community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain West Virginia institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed before licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Halltown WV electrician wiring boxElectricians in Halltown WV can perform a vast array of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually about four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be earned in various specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you pick not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Halltown WV student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is selecting an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient option for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Driving costs from Halltown WV are also reduced and some of the study materials can be accessed online also. All of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Halltown WV electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your training options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Halltown WV area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Halltown WV school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Halltown WV grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Halltown WV area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Halltown WV electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Halltown home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Halltown WV, verify that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.

But as we have discussed in this article, there are several factors that you will need to assess and compare between the schools you are reviewing. It’s a must that any electrical tech school that you are examining includes a lot of hands-on training. Classes should be smaller in size and each student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching should offer a real-world perspective, and the training program should be current and conform with industry standards. Training programs differ in duration and the type of credential provided, so you will need to ascertain what length of program and degree or certificate will best serve your needs. Every training program provides unique options for certification as well. Probably the best approach to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the teachers and students. Invest some time to sit in on a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the training program you choose is the right one for you.
