Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Mac Arthur WV electrician on power line poleThere are several options to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Mac Arthur WV. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by West Virginia vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are provided by West Virginia community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some West Virginia colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Mac Arthur WV electrician wiring boxElectricians in Mac Arthur WV can carry out a vast array of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally around 4 to 5 years of experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be acquired in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may need to pass in the future.

And as a bonus numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving expenses from Mac Arthur WV are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available on line also. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Mac Arthur WV electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Mac Arthur WV area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Mac Arthur WV school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Mac Arthur WV grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Mac Arthur WV area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Mac Arthur WV electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Mac Arthur home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Mac Arthur WV, confirm that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
