Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Hillsboro WI electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Hillsboro WI. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief summaries of the three most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Wisconsin trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards those who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are provided by Wisconsin community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Wisconsin colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed before licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the program and quit. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Hillsboro WI students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Hillsboro WI electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Hillsboro home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Hillsboro WI, check that the programs you are considering provide those choices.
